NEW POLL FINDS AMERICANS "AFRAID" OF OBAMACARE. "Americans ... are also afraid of healthcare reform and would rather stick with a flawed system than change to something new, the poll by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions found." (Maggie Fox, "Strong Opinions On Health Reform But Few Facts," Reuters, 5/4/10)

AMERICANS HAVE EVERY REASON TO BE AFRAID

BECAUSE OBAMACARE'S NEW COMPLICATIONS, COSTS WILL HARM JOB CREATORS

"Massachusetts Medical-Device Companies Say They'll Probably Cut Jobs, Increase Prices And Take Other Measures In Order To Pay For The Federal Health-Care Reform's New 2.3 Percent Sales Tax On Their Products, According To A Survey." (Jay Fitzgerald, "Medical-Device Companies Warn Of Job Cuts, Price Increases," The Boston Herald, 5/4/10)

Venture Capitalists Will Now Shy Away From Investing In Biotech Companies Because Of ObamaCare. "The landmark health reform effort passed by Congress this year poses financial challenges for biotech companies, a prominent investor said Tuesday at the BIO International Convention. 'You can't provide more health care to everybody at lower cost,' said Steven Burrill, CEO of San Francisco-based Burrill & Co., during his annual state of the industry report." (Wendy Lee, "Health Care Overhaul Is A Challenge For Biotech," Minneapolis Star Tribune, 5/4/10)

  • Thomas Novelli, Medical Device Manufacturers Association: "For Smaller Companies With A Razor-Thin Profit Margin, This Is Really Going To Cut Into Your Lifeline..." (Wendy Lee, "Health Care Overhaul Is A Challenge For Biotech," Minneapolis Star Tribune, 5/4/10)

Charlotte, NC-Based SPX Corporation Took A $6.2 Million Hit Because Of ObamaCare. "SPX Corporation today reported results for the first quarter ended April 3, 2010... Tax Impact of Health Care Legislation... In the first quarter of 2010 the company recorded a non-cash charge of $6.2 million, or $0.12 per share, as a result of this legislation." ("SPX Reports First Quarter 2010 Results," Press Release, 5/5/10)

Chattanooga, TN-Based Unum Group Took A $10.2 Million Hit Because Of ObamaCare. "Employee benefits and disability insurance provider Unum Group said Tuesday its first-quarter net income rose 39 percent on higher revenue and an investment gain. ... They also included a $10.2 million charge linked to health care reform." ("Unum Group 1Q Profit Rises 39 Percent," The Associated Press, 5/4/10)

Bethesda, MD-Based USEC Inc. Took A $6.5 Million Hit Because Of ObamaCare. "USEC Inc. today reported a net loss of $9.7 million or 9 cents per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2010, compared to a net loss of $2.1 million or 2 cents per share for the first quarter of 2009. ... The income tax provision in the three months ended March 31, 2010 was $5.4 million which included a one-time charge of $6.5 million related to the change in tax treatment of Medicare Part D reimbursements as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as modified by the Reconciliation Act of 2010 signed into law at the end of March 2010." ("USEC Reports First Quarter 2010 Results," Press Release, 5/4/10)

AND DOCTORS ARE CRITICIZING NEW GOVERNMENT MANDATES

FOR COMPUTERIZED MEDICAL RECORDS

Dr. Robert LeBow, A Physician From Southbridge, MA, Worries Computerized Medical Records "Carr[y] Hidden Costs, Chief Among Them Productivity Losses." "President Obama has earmarked some $35 billion in stimulus funds to spur a nationwide rollout of computerized medical records, but even a big dose of federal cash is not enough for physicians like Dr. Robert LeBow of Southbridge. ... But LeBow is reluctant to embrace a technology that he believes carries hidden costs, chief among them productivity losses while he and his staff master the system." (Catherine Arnst, "Doctors Not In Stampede To Go Digital," The Boston Globe, 5/4/10)

  • Dr. LeBow Says These Records "Are Quite Complex And Controversial, And A Lot More Expensive Than They Would Seem On The Surface" And May Opt To Be Penalized For Not Going Digital. "Electronic medical records 'are quite complex and controversial, and a lot more expensive than they would seem on the surface,' said LeBow -- so he may just forgo the federal government's money. And if he does, he knows he will also have to accept a lower Medicare reimbursement rate that will be imposed as a penalty on any doctor who hasn't gone digital by 2015." (Catherine Arnst, "Doctors Not In Stampede To Go Digital," The Boston Globe, 5/4/10)

Doctors' Price Tag Could "Easily Climb To $100,000 Or More." "Also, for many doctors, the government subsidy would cover only a portion of a new records system's price tag, which can easily climb to $100,000 or more. ... The Department of Health and Human Services estimates it will dole out $31 billion to $45 billion in stimulus payments-- $44,000 per system to doctors and $2 million and up for hospitals." (Catherine Arnst, "Doctors Not In Stampede To Go Digital," The Boston Globe, 5/4/10
